How many times have you struggled to find a gift that is practical, well-designed, and sustainably-produced? While those criteria are certainly relative to both the giver and receiver, we think Oakland’s GDS Cloth Goods has rolled out some solid contenders in the awesome eco-friendly pieces category this year.

GDS has been making aprons and damn good pour-over coffee filters for a hot minute now, but the company’s latest drop goes beyond locally-made organic cotton wares with a brand-new recycled denim textile.

The collection is made up of three aprons for food industry folks and home cooks alike, plus a pair of pants, a super-cute halter top, a tote bag, and a pillow made from production scraps. The textile comes from Guatemala and is made by The New Denim Project, which actually recycles denim to create an all-new fabric. Pieces in the collection are sewn in the Bay Area, and priced between $68 (for the pillow), and $154 (for the woke pant). Through the end of the year, GDS is donating 5% of sales to RAICES, a nonprofit that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees.

Order pieces from the collection online, or—if you want to see/feel this crazy denim amalgamation before you buy—check out GDS’s pop-up at Gravel & Gold, (3266 21st Street in the Mission), on Saturday, December 14 from 10 am-1 pm. Lady Falcon Coffee Club will be there making pour-overs with GDS’s Ebb filters, so it’s basically the most immersive, lady-powered GDS experience imaginable.
