How to Send Your Mom Fresh Flowers from San Francisco
My mother doesn't need anything and she's really bad at deciding what she wants. That makes Mother's Day shopping... special. We haven't lived in the same state for more than a decade, so my default is to send her local items, reasoning that at least she's receiving something she wouldn't find at home. (For what it's worth, the Ferry Building can be your one-stop shop on that front.)
When shipping deadlines become an issue, flowers are cliché, but surprisingly appreciated. When you're taking the flower route, you've got two local options in San Francisco that offer next-day shipping in the continental US: Farmgirl Flowers and BloomThat.
There are a couple major reasons to love Farmgirl Flowers. The bouquets are beautiful and the company is a boot-strapped, woman-owned business that you can feel good supporting.
Farmgirl founder and CEO Christina Stembel partners with farms that pay living wages, avoid harmful chemicals, and have medical benefits for their teams. About 80 percent of their flowers come from American farmers, and Stembel always tries to buy domestic flowers first. (If you want a 100 percent domestic bouquet, they'll make it happen.) Most of Stembel's San Francisco staff consists of full time employees who receive medical benefits at no cost. (She only hires staff as contractors' at the individual worker's request.) You'll be hard-pressed to find a florist that can (1) deliver next-day cross-country and (2) outshine Farmgirl on design and social consciousness.
Prices start at $48 for a "fun size" bouquet, and go up to $180 for an XL bouquet (with approximately 70 blooms). FedEx overnight delivery is $25, available Tuesday–Friday, so if you want to order for Mother's Day, I suggest placing the order by Wednesday, May 10.
BloomThat is another solid option for supporting a local business while making someone's day. The company describes itself as "obsessed with sourcing the most stunning, responsibly grown blooms...across the globe to deliver the freshest, seasonal stems from the places they grow best." The company also focuses on a curated selection of bouquets, which can change daily or weekly. Occasionally, there are lower-priced weekly specials based on which flowers are in season. (Currently, that's a small arrangement of lillies for $32.)
Standard arrangements are $54–$94. Weekday delivery is $19.99 and Saturday delivery is $29.99. Again, if you want to minimize your shipping cost and secure pre-Mother's Day delivery, place your order by Wednesday, May 10.
Mother's Day is Sunday, May 14, so you still have time to find and ship perfect local gift for mom. If you choose flowers, and you want to keep your business local, check out Farmgirl Flowers and BloomThat.
