No Thursday Night Plans? Join a Fundraiser for This Local Comedy Series
Janene Lin is exactly the kind of badass woman you hope you'll meet. Despite a successful career in advertising, Lin had a dream of creating a comedy series to elevate the Chinese American perspective and the female voice. So she bootstrapped the project. She gave up vacations and a lot of her social life for years. She wrote. She saved money. And this summer, she self-funded production for Neither Here Not There, which was filmed right here in San Francisco.
The show centers around a young Chinese American ad exec who is trying to rebrand a condom company for women, and "wrangling crazy coworkers, overly critical parents, and her own unrealistic expectations" in the process. Lin describes the project as "a story about a first-generation Chinese American woman working to reconcile the traditions of the past with the ideals of the present. It’s about the struggles of everyday women who are fighting the social expectations that tend to put us in boxes. It’s a story that has weight in its origin, even if there's levity in its delivery."
Now that filming is complete, Lin still needs another $10,000 to for post-production. And that's where you come in. Tonight, NHNT is hosting a fun-raiser at Monroe (473 Broadway) and you're invited. Tickets are $30, and will get you into the party where you can meet Lin and the cast and crew, and enjoy beats by DJ Lani Love and a performance by actor and musician Michael Ching. There will also be catering by Red's Southern Smoke (Asian-inspired Southern BBQ) and Doug Montgomery's Pulled Pork sandwiches. Even if you can't make tonight festivities, the ticket link will remain live for about two weeks, so you can still give Lin your cold, hard cash after the party.
