Timbuk2 Teams With Apexer for a Street-Art Inspired Collection
To live in San Francisco is to know Timbuk2, the Mission-based brand that's practically a part of the Bay Area commuter uniform. While the company makes everything from suitcases to dog carriers, it's best-known for its messenger and bike bags. This week, Timbuk2 is introducing a limited-edition capsule collection of bags featuring kaleidoscope designs from iconic San Francisco street artist, Apexer, and I've got a sneak peek for you.
The collab is part of Timbuk2’s Future Shapers Campaign, celebrating people who catalyze change and give back to the cities the brand calls home. Apexer—an SF native who started his career with a spray paint-filled messenger bag—is the first artist featured in the campaign. Pulling inspiration from graphic design, high fashion, architecture, and abstract art, his bold, colorful work has been featured in major cities across the globe and on lots of murals around the Bay Area.
For Apexer, teaming up with Timbuk2 was a no-brainer. "Growing up in San Francisco, Timbuk2 has always been a ubiquitous force in the city’s creative spaces," he says. "There’s definitely a special synergy between bike messengers and street artists. Both communities tend to be quick and constantly on the move."
The partnership began at a Timbuk2 party in SF last year, where Apexer held a live graffiti session for neighborhood residents and street art fans. The response was so positive that Timbuk2 took the artwork to its most popular styles—the Tuck Pack, the Mini-Prospect, and the Classic Messenger Bag. The collab bags are sewn in Timbuk2's San Francisco factory, and will retail for $119 each.
Timbuk2 is giving Bay Area fans first dibs on the bags during a party at its Hayes Valley shop (506 Hayes Street) on Wednesday, March 8, from 6pm-9pm. Apexer will be debuting the collection and offering a limited-run of signed prints of his artwork during the fête, plus there will be music, beer from Fort Point Beer Company, and a margarita bike blender. You can RSVP here for the party.
