This Bay Area Startup Will Sell You JLo's Met Gala Dress
Even if you weren't invited to the Met Ball, you can still take home a piece of fashion history from the first Monday in May. Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing has teamed up with San Francisco-based experiences marketplace If Only to auction seven of his Met Gala creations to benefit (RED), Bono's global fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
Rousteing dressed Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez, Natalia Vodianova, Trevor Noah, Natasha Poly, Juliette Binoche, and Julia Stegner for the soiree, and all their looks are now for sale through the site. According to IfOnly, Rousteing donated the pieces to raise "money and awareness for the AIDS fight."
Starting bids for all of the women's looks are $5,000; Noah's and Rodriguez's tuxedos start at $2,500 and $1,500, respectively. While four-figure pricing isn't accessible for most shoppers, those numbers are shockingly low for Balmain. (Rousteing's heavily-embroidered cocktail looks generally retail in the $10,000-$20,000 range.) As of publication time, Noah's tuxedo was the only item that had received a bid. Before you entrepreneurial types get ideas about bidding and flipping these pieces, the auction terms clearly state that items "may not be resold or re-auctioned in any circumstance."
Auctions close on Monday, May 21 at 10 am PST, so check out the refresher on all seven looks below, and start scraping together those pennies for your Balmain dream dress.
