Alexander Wang Owes His Love of Pride to His San Francisco Upbringing
Alexander Wang has teamed up with Trojan once again this year for a special Pride partnership, and the merch is pretty damn delightful.
Wang is the San Francisco-born design star who's been wowing fashion editors for the last 13 years. In addition to running his eponymous label, which is leading the way in breaking up with the New York Fashion Week, he's also worked as the creative director at Balenciaga. Trojan, of course, is a condom brand. It may not be the most obvious of partnerships, but Wang has never been the most traditional designer.
Wang told Mic. that his Bay Area upbringing sparked his love of Pride Month. "For me, growing up in San Francisco, pride has always been something that’s been such an influential and important event for me. Coming to New York, where it was on a bigger scale, it was something that I knew I wanted to be a part of — especially in this time when there’s so much [division] and negativity out there. It became even more important for me to participate and use this platform that I have to share a positive message and bring people together for not only what they have in common, but what their differences are."
The collab consists of limited edition t-shirts ($125), socks, and condoms (free with purchase) with "Protect Your Wang" branding. Products are exclusively available online and at Wang's Soho flagship store (103 Grand Street). The condoms are free with a t-shirt or sock purchase, and will be handed out during the New York Pride Parade on Sunday, June 24. A portion of all proceeds from the collection will go towards the New York LGBT Center's sexual health and education programs.
If "Protect Your Wang" t-shirts, socks, and condoms were the only things truly missing from your life, congratulations. Your patience has been rewarded.
